Projects Past & Present

This page is dedicated to the many
projects and our historical markers.

The National Society accomplishes the majority of its work under a committee system through the dedication of its members.  It is through patriotic research, preservation, education, and promotion within the general populous and especially within the educational systems we promote the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence.

The New Orleans Chapter achieves its goals which includes but not limited to the following committees:  American Indians, Conservation, Constitution Week Observations, Commemorative Events, DAR Schools sponsorship, Services for Veterans, Lineage Research, Public Relation and Media, Programs, Promotion of The Flag of the United States of America, Women’s Issues, and Literacy.

Through the diligent work of the various committees awards can be granted in the following fields—American History, Americanism, Community Service, Good Citizens, Education, and the accomplishments of Junior American Citizens.

A short description and motivation for some committees can be found in the following explanations:

When is Constitution Week and why is it observed?

Constitution Week is September 17-23.  This observation was officially declared by President Eisenhower on August 2, 1956 as a culmination of a proposal the DAR sent through Senator William F. Knowland of California.  The Constitution of the United States of America is the safeguard of our liberties and champion of our freedoms.  We observe the promotion of Constitution Week by reception of proclamations from government officials, library displays, and the promotion and/or attendance of Constitution Week activities.

What is done for our American Veterans?  We provide time and resources towards our Veterans here and abroad (i.e. providing phone cards and toiletries).

How does the Chapter promote American History?  One of the many ways the New Orleans Chapter promotes American History is through the dedication of historical markers.  Among the nine known markers the following information is provided:

The southern terminus of the Jefferson Highway from Winnipeg to New Orleans (Common and St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, dedicated 1/14/1919; rededicated 1/14/1989 and 3/2/1997)
